Sasaran Ehsan Utama Sdn. Bhd.’s (SEU) involvement in DxP oil palm planting material started in 1985 after obtaining numerous pedigrees of breeding materials; Dura, Pisifera and Tenera seeds from a primary seed producer with established R&D protocol dating back to 1930. Hence, we are fortunate that the current planting material, comprised of mainly 5 DxD crosses has gone through generations of vigorous selection and introgression (integration) of diverse varieties such as Ekona (high oil to bunch), Bamenda (high altitude palms), La Me (short and drought tolerant) and Oleifera (high unsaturated oil and low height increment).  For the paternal lineage, we have selected 6 La Me Pisifera palms with good sib-tenera performance while Yangambi Pisifera pollen is used to obtain precocity (early yield). La Me offsprings have good characteristics such as drought tolerance and short stem height. Here, we practice crossing between very different pedigrees so as to enable offspring to have a very diverse gene-pool to select from. Crossing between closely related planting materials may result in inbreeding which lowers yield production. For example, La Me Pisifera pollen will not be used to pollinate a distinctly La Me Dura palm. SEU has since been awarded with the SIRIM Product Certification License for compliance with MS 157:2005.
